Nokia N97, why it’s time for it to go…

August 17th, 2009

After two months my love affair with the Nokia N97 is over, it’s been shortlived I know, but I expect certain things from my mistress’s these days and the N97 just doesn’t deliver.

I can forgive the processor speed and the low ram, in the real world they haven’t caused me any issues, my N97 has been reliable, hasn’t crashed, locked up and my camera lense isn’t scratched.

I can almost forgive the lack of C: drive space, but this remains a big issue, especially for non-techie types

So what’s the problem then…

No iSync plugin for Apple Mac users

Sorry Nokia but two months and two firmware updates after release this just isn’t acceptable.
Trouble is Nokia screwed up the sync profile on the N97, and until they fix it there won’t be an iSync plugin.
I need to keep my phone in sync with my computers, this is a £500 high end device, it should be able to sync with my Mac.

No VOIP/Internet Tel/Sip Function/Skype

I use the Sipgate’s VOIP service as my business number, I had the Internet Tel function on my N80, N95, N95 8GB, E51, E71 and E75, but Nokia now seems to have caved in to the operators and removed the VOIP functionality, bad enough on a network subsidised handset but mine’s sim free.
And whatever happened to the Skype app? despite huge press when announced, still not available.

Shouldn’t I wait?

These issues may get solved in the future via firmware updates, but I don’t want to wait a year for Nokia to make the N97 the device it should have been at launch.

With the N97 currently selling for as little as £280 on eBay, like many love affairs it has turned in to a very expensive mistake.

So what now?

Well a change is as good as a rest and being a bit disillusioned with Nokia, the new phone in my life is a 32GB iPhone 3GS, I’ve been playing with her for a few weeks now and she is amazing,  but I can’t be fully faithful to her, so for business I’ve taken a bit on the side, the new Nokia E52.

It’s your last chance Nokia, so you had better release an E52 iSync plugin pretty damn sharpish.
